"I warmly welcome the publication of this excellent booklet which will be of great benefit to children and young people everywhere."Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss, DBE, President of the Family Division

What happens in court? follows the same clear, colourful format as our other booklets for children and young people (Adoption: what it is and what it means and Fostering: what it is and what it means) and is just the thing for anyone who has searched for a user-friendly guide to help children understand the role that a court might play in their lives.

Through telling the story of seven-year-old Lee who goes into foster care, this booklet will help others in a similar situation, including children waiting to be adopted.

It includes information on:

  • who's who in court,
  • the various court orders that can be made,
  • adoption plans,
  • adoption orders and
  • adoption hearings.

Like the other booklets in this series, there are teaser questions, quizzes and easy-to-understand definitions in addition to essential information which will help children involved in court procedures understand what is happening to them. There is also space for children to record their own experiences related to being involved in court proceedings.
