BAAF, November 2003

Introduction to the book

Why some adopted people embark on a search for information or reunion with birth family members, and others do not, is an emotive and fascinating subject. It attracts media attention, articles in the professional press and research interest.

The book is based on a unique study about what motivates some adopted people to search or not. They highlight the issues involved and provide a greater understanding of the complexities and feelings that may be encountered on the way. Users will gain an insight into what it is like growing up adopted and an understanding of the lifelong issues for all concerned.

It is suitable for use in group work led by adoption professionals, trainers or counsellors, it can also be used if you want to work on your own or with someone else. This book will also be useful in other areas concerning identity, family relationships and separation and loss, such as infertility counselling, donor-conceived people and inter-country adoption.

Searching Questions is illustrated by the words of searchers and non-searchers alike and offers a vivid portrait of adopted people. It will help all those who decide to embark on a journey where 'truth is often more involving than fiction' and the final, unpredictable outcome may be either heart-breaking disappointment or real joy.
