Preparing to Adopt - A training pack for preparation groups
Devised by Pat Beesley, Barbara Hutchinson, Ian Millar and Sushila de Sousa
Written by Eileen Fursland
Comprehensively revised with additional new material
This new edition of Preparing to Adopt fulfils the urgent need, across the UK, to ensure that agencies offer relevant, high quality and comprehensive preparation for people who wish to adopt. This established and highly respected training programme sets out a far-reaching and inclusive approach to preparing adopters. It has been comprehensively revised and updated to meet the legislative requirements for both procedure and practice in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It reflects the Adoption and Children Act 2002 in England and Wales and the Adoption and Children (Scotland) Act 2007, which was implemented in September 2009.
Issues covered include:
The children that need permanence;
How children learn to feel secure;
Overcoming the effects of neglect and abuse;
The physical, emotional and developmental impact on children or parental drug and alcohol misuse;
Keeping family links alive;
Building resilience in children;
The matching process.
Preparing to Adopt will provide agencies with an agreed common curriculum in a format that will allow applicants and agency staff to make practical use of the learning from preparation courses to underpin the eventual assessment. The course will enable prospective adopters to gain an appreciation of what adoption means and the roles of all those involved as well as to consider the implications of adoption themselves.
This has been revised to include the latest available statistics for all four countries in the UK as well as an increased number of articles to help applicants think through the issues they are likely to encounter of they go on to adopt. It also provides space for applicants to record thoughts and feelings about what they have learnt.
