Welcoming Children into your Neighbourhood

BAAF, December 2004

This colourful, short booklet explains to neighbours and other members of the community what might be going on when some unruly, noisy children move into the neighbourhood, or the new boy next door is sullen and rude when you speak to him, or maybe the girl in the next street disrupts lessons at your children's school, or argues or fights at your local youth club.

Children who are adopted or fostered and children who are seeking asylum may not seem to have much in common - but all are trying to survive things that happened to them in the past. They will usually have seen and experienced events from which it will take them a long time to recover, and this may make them behave differently to other children and young people - perhaps in a way that could cause problems for you and your community.

This guide will help you to understand more about these children and their background and behaviour, and to think about the ways in which you and others in your neighbourhood can welcome and support them, and can create an environment where all children can learn, grow and fulfil their potential.
