It might be difficult for some people to understand about refugee children. If they want to stay happy then they do not want to hear our story.
Abdoul, a young man from Somalia

The result of a project set up by BAAF’s Refugee Young People’s Forum in which recollections, observations, thoughts and feelings were candidly shared, this thought-provoking book gives voice to a range of experiences of young unaccompanied asylum-seekers and refugees. These include the pre-exile experience; arrival into the UK; experiences in care; school life; the asylum determination process; supports and networks; and the impact of racism, prejudice and xenophobia.

‘Listening to children’ provides an insight into the experience of young unaccompanied asylum seekers and refugees but will also learn about the complex needs that these young people have, needs that can only be met by the effective collaboration of professionals in various fields. The book concludes with “messages” from unaccompanied refugee children – most importantly, that they need to be, and deserve to be, listened to and heard.
