The education of looked-after children has been top of the political agenda in recent months. In a significant contribution to the debate this bumper edition of BAAF’s Adoption & Fostering journal focuses exclusively on the education of looked-after children, and how, when and where they are supported or – more often failed by “the system”.

This special issue contains challenging and thought provoking papers by expert academics and practitioners from the UK and Australia, among them guest editor Sonia Jackson, Robbie Gilligan, author of Promoting resilience, and Roger Morgan, Children’s Rights Director for England. Themes include:

  • Foster care and higher education
  • Education and self-reliance among care leavers
  • Adoptive parents’ views of education
  • The contribution of spare-time activities for young people in care
  • A Scottish perspective on improving the educational experience of children and young people in public care
  • The work of Our Place, a centre that promotes educational achievement of looked after and adopted children

This special issue is guest edited by Sonia Jackson, author of Nobody Ever Told Us School Mattered (BAAF, 2001) and a leading researcher and writer in the field.
