There are nearly 10,000 unaccompanied and asylum seeking children in the UK today. Local authorities have a duty of responsibility to look after these vulnerable children to the same standards as any other looked after child. An increasing number are being placed in foster care. To help prepare foster carers for the complex task of looking after these children, they need formal training to give them understanding and skills to add to their existing experience and commitment.

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the issues for use by agencies in training experienced foster carers who have successfully completed basic foster care preparation courses. The course is designed to cover two days and will familiarise foster carers with the issues surrounding the children's situation and the realities of looking after unaccompanied asylum-seeking and refugee children.

Contents include:

  • Unaccompanied refugee children - where they come from and why
  • Understanding the experiences, feelings and needs of refugee children
  • Preparing to help unaccompanied refugee children cope with their experiences
  • Meeting their practical needs
  • Preparing young refugees to leave care
  • Caring for the carers
  • Directory (of refugee organisations)
  • Overheads and handouts (on CD Rom)

This unique resource will enable fostering providers to ensure that foster carers are properly equipped for this task.
