Filmed on location at The Drill Hall in London, this inspirational and thought-provoking DVD features readings by 30 children and young people who contributed to BAAF’s popular anthology The Colours in Me. Reflecting on their personal experiences of adoption through poetry, prose and artwork, these young people take centre stage to provide a unique insight into what it feels like and what it means to be adopted.
The DVD can be viewed as a complete performance, with each child providing their own unique perspective on adoption. The readings have also been grouped into five chapters which reflect particular themes – adoption stories, on being adopted, staying in touch, revisiting my birth place and messages – and which can be viewed separately.
The DVD includes an introduction by John Simmonds, who reflects on the importance of listening to children, and a commentary by Perlita Harris, the editor of The Colours in Me anthology, who provides an insight into the book’s conception and development.
Readings from The Colours in Me is accompanied by a booklet which lists all of the young people and their readings, explains how it can be used and details how the DVD relates to The Colours in Me anthology.
The DVD will be of particular relevance to adopted children and their families, whilst all children will find the thoughts, feelings and experiences of their peers of interest. Prospective adoptive parents attending preparation groups will gain a realistic insight into what children feel about the adoption experience, whilst social workers and child care professionals can use the DVD to inform their own practice, focus on the voice of the child and address specific issues which contribute to the adoption experience.
