Care Stories features seven young people who describe their experiences in care in their own words. Their thought-provoking testimony raises issues of significance for all those working with looked after children and adolescents, including loss, trust, relationships, identity, race and culture, quality of care and moving to independence.
These themes are explored and contextualised by an accompanying DVD and a training guide. Designed as a flexible teaching tool for group training and individual learning, Care Stories is suitable for use by a wide range of professionals and students, including social workers, mental health professionals, teachers, health and community workers. It can also be used with foster carers and prospective carers.
DVD 1 contains the Care Stories film in which young people describe growing up in care. It is accompanied by Care Stories Considered, a film in which mental health specialists and social workers develop the themes raised.
DVD 2 consists of longer extracts from interviews of three of the young people who appear in Care Stories, allowing a more in-depth study.
The book focuses on relevant key topics written by expert professionals with extensive experience of working with looked after children and adolescents. It also gives suggestions for training exercises and discussion.
This includes papers on attachment; how neuroscience can help us understand the challenges of caring for children; responding to the emotional needs of early childhood; how thinking about life cycles can help in day to day work with looked after children; the impact of “race” and identity issues; therapeutic work with looked after children; and much else besides.
