Conservative Party’s Commission on Social Workers

The Conservative Party have established a Commission on Social Workers and invited submissions for various Stakeholders. In their letter of invitation they say ‘For some time now we have been concerned about the poor image of social workers amongst the public, media and other professionals, which has undoubtedly contributed to an undermining of morale leading to recruitment and retention problems. Whilst we constantly hear positive statements about the important contributions of growing numbers of doctors, nurses and teachers, for example, this is not mirrored in the portrayal of social workers though they play a key role in the support of vulnerable children, adults and families. In short we need to make social workers be seen as part of the solution rather than as part of the problem, as has been achieved in many other countries.’ BAAF was invited by Tim Loughton MP, Shadow Minister for Children to submit its evidence in relation to the issues set out above.

Modernising the Regulatory Framework for Children’s Social Services
The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) is conducting a review of the regulatory framework for children's social services. The review will be carried out in two phases, with Phase 1 will concentrate on inspection frequencies and methodology, and Phase 2 will examine the detail of the national minimum standards. Phase 1 is now underway and the government is seeking views on proposals to modernise the requirements for the inspection and regulation of children’s social services.

BAAF would welcome your views on these proposals, so please send any comments to Andrea Warman at andrea.warman@baaf.org.uk or call 020 7421 2640.
