BAAF statement on issues raised by Baby G case

Issued: 1 February 2008

David Holmes, Chief Executive of BAAF, says: "Why are we so intent on believing that social workers are hell bent on stealing babies in order to meet adoption targets? The sad fact is that thousands of babies and young children come into care every year because they cannot live at home in safety. These are often children living in desperate family situations with parents who misuse drugs and alcohol or have serious mental health problems. Coming into care is often a temporary arrangement.

"Decisions about removing a child from its family are not taken lightly and require a court order if the parents do not consent. We welcome Mr Justice Munby’s judgment this week because we know that when the system is followed correctly it works to keep vulnerable children safe and listens to everyone concerned, including parents."
