BAAF response to Care Matters in Northern Ireland – A Bridge to a Better Future

Issued: 22nd March 2007

BAAF today welcomes the launch of a consultation on services for children in and on the edge of care in Northern Ireland. The charity says Care Matters in Northern Ireland - A Bridge to a Better Future provides a once in a generation opportunity to transform the life chances of these children.

David Holmes, BAAF Chief Executive, says: "This consultation is very important. It recognises how crucial it is to provide vulnerable children with the very best services possible. We are pleased to see the emphasis on planning carefully and quickly so that children are given the opportunity to grow up in a loving family environment when they cannot safely remain in the care of their birth family.

He adds: "It is absolutely right that the vital role of foster carers, social workers and the wider health and social care workforce is acknowledged - none of the reforms suggested in the consultation document can be achieved without their valuable contribution and support."

Frances Nicholson, Director of BAAF Northern Ireland, adds: "This document makes many good proposals to meet the specific needs of children in Northern Ireland. And it is encouraging that the document addresses the fact that a number of the key improvements will need significant extra resources."

"We will be responding to the consultation and urging others to do the same."
