Adoption card a “cheap gimmick”, leading adoption charity says

Issued: 16 October 02

This press release applies to England & Wales

The British Association for Adoption & Fostering today commented as follows on The Christian Institute's proposed 'adoption card' to protect children against gay adoption.

Felicity Collier, Chief Executive of BAAF says

"We totally reject the concept of an 'adoption card' to protect parents wishes against gay adoption. This is a cheap gimmick which plays on people's fears about their own mortality and what will happen to their children in the event of their death.

"In reality, very few children are adopted because their parent has died, although our MORI poll revealed that this is one of the main reasons why people think children need adopting.

"Right now 5,000 children need new families through adoption. Statistics show that at least four out of ten of these children will have been neglected or abused and unable to return home safely. Let's not let them down by playing on people's fears and focusing on the rights of adults rather than the rights of children."
