CRB checks on adopted people

The CRB helps all types of organisations in England and Wales make more informed recruitment decisions.

I am applying for a position that requires me to obtain a Disclosure from the CRB and do not wish to reveal details of my pre-adoption names to my employer. What can I do?

If you were adopted before the age of 10 you do not have to provide your previous name(s). This is because the age of criminal responsibility is deemed to be 10. There is no possibility therefore that an individual could be the subject of a criminal record in a name that was used up until that age (for more information on criminal responsibility see the Children and Young Persons Act 1933 Chapter 12 Section 50).

If you were adopted after the age of 10 the CRB require full details of your previous name(s). However the CRB recognise that the process of revealing pre-adoption names to employers can be difficult. It has therefore developed a process, in conjunction with BAAF, that allows individuals to submit pre-adoption names to the CRB directly.
