BAAF is a registered and inspected Voluntary Adoption Agency and holds the adoption records of people who were adopted as young children through the British Adoption Project. This research based project operated between 1965 and 1969.
The majority of those adopted will be in their 40’s and we do not have up to date contact details for many of them.
The last time there was an official contact between the British Adoption Project and the families was in 1980-81. It is envisaged that most of those who were adopted will know of their adoption status.
Access to records
Since 1975 adopted people have been given the legal right to access information to enable them to obtain a copy of their original birth certificate. Some adopted people want to access further information about their origins and family background held by the adoption agency. Over the years BAAF has received many such requests from people adopted through the British Adoption Project, which we have welcomed.
In December 2005, the Adoption and Children Act 2002 was implemented which has made some major changes to the adoption legislation. Adopted people continue to have rights to access information about their adoption and you can do this by contacting;
Patricia McGinty,
Child Placement Consultant at Be My Parent via patricia.mcginty@baaf.org.uk or by ringing 0207 421 2661.
Using an intermediary service
As before, we can offer adopted adults an intermediary service which means that we can help them contact birth relatives and act on their behalf. The new law has now extended the right to birth relatives of adopted people, who can also request an intermediary service so that they can be put in touch with their relative who has been adopted.
Preventing contact (registering a veto)
However as an adopted person you can now register a wish for ‘no contact’ on the Adoption Contact Register which is held by the Registrar General. However you can also register a Veto – either absolute or qualified with the Appropriate Adoption Agency (BAAF). Registering a Veto can restrict and or prevent contact from intermediaries acting on behalf of your birth relatives. If you would like more information about how to register this with BAAF then please contact Patricia McGinty on 020 7421 2661 who will arrange to meet with you and discuss what is involved. For more information about registering a wish for no contact or Vetoes visit www.adoptionsearchreunion website.
