Who we are
BAAF’s President and Patrons are supporters of our cause who have either been touched personally by adoption or fostering, or have worked in their professional lives to improve the lives of children separated from their birth families.
BAAF's President, Rupert Hambro
Chairman of Hambros Bank until 1986 when he left with his father and two brothers to set up J O Hambro; a Mergers and Acquisitions and Investment Management business. Has own private equity business with stakes in a number of businesses.
Other positions include:
Chairman The Society of Merchants Trading to the Continent; Chairman of Trustees of The Silver Trust; Deputy President of The National Association of Clubs for Young People and Vice Patron of the Royal Society of British Sculptors; and Chairman of the Trustees of Chiswick House & Gardens Trust. He is also a Board member of Open Europe and was Chairman of the Museum of London and Museum in Docklands from 1998 – 2005 and Treasurer of The National Art Collections Fund
1991 – 2003.
Currently Hon Fellow University of Bath and Member of University Council, and Warden of Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths.
Patrons
The Rt Hon the Baroness Butler-Sloss
The Rt Hon the Baroness Butler-Sloss GBE is a retired judge. Among her many roles she has been High Court Judge and President of the Family Division. She is Chancellor of the University of the West of England and a Fellow of King’s College, London. She is married with three children and six grandchildren. BAAF is delighted that The Rt Hon the Baroness Butler-Sloss GBE is one of our Patrons as her extensive knowledge and experience of the family courts is a valuable asset to the charity.
Nicky Campbell
Winner of Five Gold Sony awards, including the Best Breakfast Show [2009] Nicky Campbell is a radio and television presenter, best known for his work on Watchdog, The Big Questions and Radio 5’s breakfast show, including the phone-in. Nicky has written Blue-Eyed Son, a moving account of tracing his birth family. ‘I was adopted as a baby and was very lucky to have been brought up by wonderful parents. I support BAAF so that they can help children in care today to get the best chances in life, like I did.’
Annabel Elliot
Annabel Elliot is a highly respected interior designer and has been supporting BAAF since 2005. She is a key supporter of BAAF’s special events, chairing two of our very successful fundraising events. Annabel's mother worked for an adoption agency, so whilst she was growing up she was very aware of the issues faced by children in care. ‘Home and family are key things in my life and I find it terribly moving when I see what adoption and fostering can do for people’.
Lord Laming
Lord Laming is one of the UK’s most distinguished social workers. In 1975 he was appointed as the Director of Social Services in Hertfordshire and then in 1991 he became chief inspector of social services, retiring in 1998. He was knighted in 1996 and created a life peer in 1998. In 2001-2002, he chaired the public inquiry into the death of Victoria Climbié and, more recently, he reviewed child protection practices in England for the DCSF. The findings of his review were published in 2009 in The Protection of Children in England: A progress report. Lord Laming has been a patron of BAAF since 2005.
Nimmy March
Actor Nimmy March was adopted at the age of six months by the Duke and Duchess of Richmond. Her birth parents are a white British mother and a black South African father. Nimmy's four siblings include an adopted sister who is also mixed race. Nimmy is married to Gavin Burke and has three children. Nimmy's British television screen credits include Goodnight Sweetheart, Casualty, William and Mary, Doctors, Strictly Confidential, The Bill, Law & Order UK and Waking the Dead. Nimmy has been a tremendous support to BAAF for a number of years. 'Being an adoptee I completely understand where children in care are coming from and am delighted to support the work of this amazing charity.'
