The Health Group (formerly the Medical Group)

BAAF's Health Group, founded in 1963, aims to further the interests of children and young people who are looked after by local authorities. It promotes good practice and facilitates inter-disciplinary understanding.

Membership is free and open to:

“The BAAF Health Group is the best source of specialist advice on the health aspects of adoption and fostering.”
Dr Barbara Banyard, former Medical Adviser, North East Essex Adoption Panel
  • Medical advisers to agencies that are BAAF members.
  • Physicians, nurses or related professionals with a special interest in the medical and other health aspects of adoption, fostering or related matters who are employed by an agency that is a member of BAAF.
  • Individual members who are qualified in a health discipline or have a special interest in the health aspects of adoption, fostering or related matters (e.g. health visitors, social workers, researchers).

The Health Group organises regional seminars and workshops throughout England and Wales. Every autumn the group has its annual meeting and a residential seminar. This is an opportunity for doctors, nurses and others to meet to discuss issues of common interest.

Members in Scotland have their own section that meets in the spring for its annual meeting and residential seminar.

We recommend that health advisers to member agencies become personal members of BAAF to ensure that they receive our publications, including the peer-reviewed quarterly Adoption & Fostering.

The Group's Development Officer, Dr. Florence Merredew will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Please email florence.merredew@baaf.org.uk, phone 020 7421 2642 or fax 020 7421 2601.
